Artfest, March 28-April 1, 2012 – Port Townsend, Washington
MY WORKSHOPS
Outside The Inside
Workshop Description: Andy Warhol once said, “Don’t think about making art. Just get it done. Let everyone else decide whether it’s good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art.” Now, what better ‘canvas’ is there to ease us into that fantastic mindset than a recycled cardboard box. Expect to be immersed in an intimate sensorial and narrative experience as you create an installation piece by means of street art styles and mediums. We will commence our workshop by ‘prepping’ our faux walls to receive paint, textures, and ‘grime.’ We will then draw references from streets of big cities in their inclusion of: stenciled images, scribbles, found-on-the-street papers, stickers, and photocopies. We’ll reveal a wide range of our response to the challenge of calling forth pieces of our souls and setting them up on the ‘walls,’ forever fixed.
Postcards From The Edge
Workshop Description: There is nothing more liberating to an artist than the telling of a private visual story in a public place, to be gutsy, and confess, express, let it all out in the open, and then move on to tell a new one. It is the admitting of our core desire to be richly connected to humanity that compels us to go out to the streets, scribble on walls, journal in books, paint on canvases, and send away our hand-marked postcards. We will engage our whole being, our hearts, minds, eyes, and hands, in creating a series of postcards, made out of the interiors and exteriors of cereal boxes. Each will represent a piece of our soul, never expressed or shared before, to be put out there, to be seen by others. References of street art will strongly inspire us to express a whole array of private thoughts, disappointments, hopes, regrets, and desires. We will be experimenting with rough, textural layering processes, stenciling, using found-on-the-street papers, photocopied images, scribbling, painting, and more. Breathtaking revelations will surely take place.
Arboreal Messages
Workshop Description: Trees stand alone in their unmeasurable magnificence. However, for some reason, we humans, can not help but feel urges to accessorize them with various ritual adornments: carvings, graffiti, taggings, lights, misc. objects, and even wrap them with knittings and other man-made materials. For centuries, trees have been used by us as platforms on which to recite our not-so-subtle poetry, a surface on which to assert our visual messages, a vessel through which to carry our voices onto the world. In this workshop we will have an opportunity to do all of the above, guilt-free. We will create a book of trees. In a guerilla journaling fashion, taking references from street art, we will dress up our trees with our faux grunge, stenciled images, found-on-the-street papers, photocopies, scribbles, tags, and words. We will impress our trees with visual stories and expressive messages of independence and rebellion, creating a book that is filled with vibrancy and texture, rich imagery, and lively spirit.
