Spread #5 – Collaborative Self-Portrait July 10, 2008

At one point in time I asked friends, family members and people I related with, near and far, all ages, backgrounds, circumstances, talents, strengths, and personalities, to respond to the challenge of depicting their identity through a self-portrait painting — to set forth a piece of their soul — fixed on a 4” x 4” canvas.

I mostly create in isolation — I couldn’t have imagined the journey of discovery I would be entering. The one area where I feel completely at ease with is the area of self-expression through visual means and wasn’t quite prepared for the unease of others — I came out with tremendous admiration, respect, and gratitude for the part-takers of this project. Moreover, it was evident to me that although most feel uncomfortable seeing themselves as artists — they are.

When looking at the individual canvases it was clear to me — Each one told an honest and beautiful story and together they painted one magnificent portrait of a network, a village, a clan, a tribe — one mighty picture.

Great job Orly! I love the vase on the left page. I love the idea of all different types of people having a little bit of their identity on one canvas!

All the people on a canvas,
not hustling or bustling to get on a bus,
but just standing there,
🙂 they don’t really care.
All one huge work of art,
not just some painting stuffed in a cart.
All the individual works of art together
make it pleasantly better
then when they are alone and lonely.

That is my poem for this beautiful spread of artwork to all the friends and family that participated. It is also to you.

I love this one as well! The whole work of art is so beautiful and the description is just as touching and amazing to read as the painting itself. I love the two pictures and the beautiful abstractness of it all! 🙂
Keep up the inspiring and amazing work!

This work is so wonderful! I love how it’s not just your art, but so many other people’s too. I love that so many people participated in the painting collaboration, putting in their own individual style. It’s really inspiring!! It’s very nice how you composed the whole thing. 😀 It was so great to see this in person!

This work makes me smile. It says to me that people are the most tresured collection we have . It says to me that when we surround ourselves with family and friends we have an awesome masterpiece of color and resource. It says to me that we all have something unique to give and that we are all artists.
