Spread #31 -Art Journal Round Robin December 14, 2008Posted by Orly in Spreads.
I recently designed these art journal covers to make the blank black books more alluring, to encourage the receiver to jump in and start journaling without reservations. Also recently, I received a generous gift, an old Israeli passport altered into a handsome but raw journal by and from my nephew Gil. (See future posts for a close look.) With it came his old Colombian passport. He requested to return it to him, altered by me, as a form of a gift exchange. These two seemingly unrelated happenings prompted me to want to host a round robin, a global collaborative journal, something I wanted to do for quite some time now. 2009, what an opportune time to start something like that, to promise ourselves to be more explorative, creative, intuitive, expressive, contemplative, authentic, upbeat, off-beat, to dance to the beat of our own drums. So the way it’s going to work is..I am planning to launch a few blank journals into different corners of the world where I have personal connections. These individuals will become the journal masters of their area. Participants from different walks of life, ages, and locations will take part in this global adventure. Each individual will portray him/herself on a spread by writing, drawing, doodling, scribbling, painting, collaging, etc. The journal master will make sure the book is moving and alive and in the end returning it to me. The experience of creating one spread in a collective journal is in and by itself the purpose—the process is the outcome, the source of jubilation. If you wish a record of your pages, you may want to photocopy, scan, or photograph it before you part from the journal. If this excites you and you wish to participate in the 2009 Art Journal Round Robin I’m hosting, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org or let me know on my blog. Your page will be regarded as being unique and spirited and as such it will not be judged, critiqued, or compared to anyone else’s. It is your safe place to explore and have simple childlike fun. I will be most grateful for your contribution to what is sure to be an awe-inspiring visual journal.
If you decide to start your own art journal round robin, I’ll be delighted and honored to contribute to it. 🙂
